How long will it take to get divorced?

Most divorces take 5-6 months from when you submit your petition to when the court makes it final. This timing can change quite a bit depending on how quickly you and your partner handle the paperwork and how busy the courts are.

Getting the financial matters sorted might take much longer though. So it always good to explore your options early.

Is there any alternative to divorce?

Judicial Separation is available but it’s rare and usually only used when both of you have religious objections to divorce. It follows the same steps as divorce, but at the end, you’re not free to marry someone else. It simply means you no longer have any legal duty to live together.

If you later decide to divorce anyway, you’ll need to go through the whole process again, which would cost you more money.
